Four students from BHE and PGDE programmes receive Nissin Foods Scholarship for Elite Athletes
Four students – two from the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) programme and two taking the Postgraduate Diploma in Education programme – received the Nissin Foods Scholarship for Elite Athletes for the 2022-2023 academic year. The scholarship was established to encourage elite athletes who are in these two programmes to continue to pursue excellence in both their athletic performance and their studies, and help them become educators of health in the future.
In a press conference held last December, EdUHK President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung expressed his sincere gratitude to the Nissin Foods (Hong Kong) Charity Fund for its generous donation for the scholarship. He said, “The establishment of the scholarship enables current and retired athletes to diversify their career development. We hope the perseverance and indomitable spirit these student-athletes demonstrate will set a good example for other students.”
Chairman of the Nissin Foods (Hong Kong) Charity Fund Mr Kiyotaka Ando said, “As a leading food manufacturer, we are not only committed to exploring food-related possibilities and creating fabulous flavours, but also nurturing talent for the food industry and society. This is why we launched the Scholarship for Elite Athletes. We believe that by cultivating a healthy lifestyle among young people through food and sports, a new crop of elite athletes will emerge to carry on the Team Nissin spirit – passing it on from one generation to the next.”
The students receiving the scholarship are Mr Choi Kwan-lok (cycling, retired) and Miss Fu Chi-yan (badminton), both students of the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) programme (BHE), and Mr Dickson Tam Joe-dick (triathlon, retired) and Mr Wong Hong-ching (shuttlecock), both are studying for a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Primary) with a major in physical education.
The recipients thanked the Nissin Foods (Hong Kong) Charity Fund and the University for granting them their scholarships. Miss Fu Chi-yan, who has played badminton since the age of four, aspires to become a physical education teacher or a coach after graduation. She believes the BHE programme will equip her with the knowledge and skills necessary for developing a professional career in the sports field.
Ms Zhang Ling, Sports Ambassador of Nissin Foods and former top tennis player in Hong Kong, said, “I am glad to see our society showing greater care and appreciation for athletes and supporting them in various ways. As a professional tennis player, I understand very well the many challenges that elite athletes face and what they need. I’m proud to be part of a team responsible for creating a better learning environment for potential teachers, which will ultimately help various beneficiaries, including children in need. Through our collaborative efforts, we will play an active role in cultivating future leaders who will have a positive impact on Hong Kong, making it an even better place for all.”
